Does it settle down after running a few minutes? The cold start on the 4jb1 is a very crude affair. It works off coolant temperature and is either on or off. 5C is the switch. Does the glow plug light stay on half a second or 5 seconds? Thats the quickest way to tell if the engine thinks its cold. My bet is that you still get the short glow as the coolant isnt that cold and if it was another few degrees colder it would run perfectly.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
