4jg2 crank pulley won't come off!!!

Postby jackapoo » Mon Jul 12, 2021 9:52 pm

just wondering what the best way to get a crank shaft pulley bolt out. I've tried 2 impact guns. one electric and one a 700nm air gun. nothing budged. I've tried a breaker bar with a 1.5 meter long metal pole over the end for extra leverage, and bent the breaker bar and almost flipped the engine stand. the bolt was also soaked in wd40. is there a reason why it won't come off? is it left hand thread? the motor is a 1992 4jg2 from a jackaroo.
thanks. :D

The bolt is very tight 275 foot pound. They can seize. Dont heat it. Try the air gun again and leave it on for a bit longer. Impact guns get their torque like a hammer on a breaker bar. They dond move it much when its tight but after a few thousand hits it will release. If its been overtightened or the last person to touch it used locktight there is a risk of it snapping the bolt in the hole which will ruin your day. On the other hand though The garage that did the timing belt on my old ubs55 didnt tighten it enough and 60k later it fell out never to be seen again. The tension on the fan belt was all that stopped the crank pulley and timing pulley falling off.

Thanks geeves. Im buying a bigger compressor tomorrow for the air gun cause the one I have is to small to keep the power long enough. But I'll just keep trying the air gun.

Still having trouble getting the pulley bolt off. I bought a big air compressor to get some more punch out of my air impact gun (rated to 700nm torque) and I sat there for about an hour off giving it ugga duggas and no bolt movement at all. How tight is this f ING bolt!!!! Any ideas of what else to do?

Hey mate. Yeah mines different. I'm trying to get the timing cover off but I can't unless the pulley is off aswell. There is no 4 bolts on my pulley as stated in that link. There is only the one big bolt in the middle. I've now tryed every thing. Heaps of penetrating spray, breaker bars, air impact, heating bolt with blow torch. There is nothing I can do to get it off. I'm just about to give up on it

I think that what Pig was trying to show you was that for him, and me, there are four smaller bolts that hold on the "outer" section of the front pulley to the "inner" (as per attached photo). The outer section was only for the drive belts. Once you expose the inner you can attach the tool shown to hold the crank firmly while you undo or redo the larger main bolt. I made a similar tool (it is the PDF also in the link that Pig gave above) to Pigs and from memory used 3/4" drive socket set with a piece of pipe or RHS over the strongarm to give more purchase.
I was working on an early 90's 4JB1-T it may have changed in later years.

Mines a 1992 4jg2 so that might be why it's different.

The 4jg2 in Jackaroos are gear drive not belt so only 1 big bolt like the 2.8 in the rodeos.
The way i got mine undone was get a 24mm socket for a air gun on a breaker bar and cable tied it to the chassis disconnected the power to the fuel cut off on the injector pump and gave the engine a quick turn of the key and that undone the big bolt on the harmonic balancer.
Do this at your own risk of snapping the bolt if someone has used permeant lock tight if you don't know the history of the engine or car.

Nah my motor isn't in the car so I can't do it that way. So I'm stuck for what I should do.

When all else fails call the cavalry. Is there an engine reconditioner near you? They have a few tricks we dont. Not happy you heated the bolt though. It may have softened it making it more likely to break

Yeah heating it was my last resort. I had no other options. Now might just take it in to someone to see if they can get it.

is the pulley loose on the shaft. i had one that hammered the shaft onto the thread. broke the head off the bolt, new crank followed.

Do you still have the fly wheel on the motor try and lock it up and then put a socket and big breaker bar and pipe on it anticlockwise to undo it.
Just out of curiosity why do you need the harmonic balancer off are you rebuilding the engine.
