Am/FM radio not working with aftermarket radio

Postby EandHdad » Sun Mar 21, 2021 5:58 pm

I had an auto electrician install an aftermarket Appleplay device. However the AM/FM radio never worked properly on it. The sparky said it was my aerial - but that worked fine with the original radio.
I have a 2013 dmax LS.
I’ve pulled the device out and the aerial is/was pushed in fully.
What could be the issue - does the aerial have an amplifier or electrical component that might be the issue.
Any ideas to do to rector. I life in rural WA and want my AM radio!
In the city I can get the strong FM stations.
Cheers

Thanks,
I have one of those whippy aerials- the kind that should be unscrewed before going into a car wash. the latest MUX has a small stubby one which I think needs the amp. Not mine. There is just the standard aerial plug in the rear. Although I note there is no earth connected to the radio unlike the YouTube clip with the same device.

Earthing can be either a wire or through the crews holding it in. I dont know how well earthed things will be via the screws in the Mux but it only takes a little paint to raise the resistance so it still works but not well. Fitting the earth wire is easy and might help. Always try the easy things first.
Also the aerial fitted might be optimised for fm. Try a cheap universal aerial hand held to see if this helps
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
