Just wondering if anyone can tell me if you need to disconnect front brakes when taking out upper control arms on a 1996 Isuzu mu?

Its a lot easier to do so. The brake line runs through the center of the arm so the only way to do it without removing the brakes is to remove the arm from the pivot bolt assembly instead of removing this as part of the arm. Your brake fluid is probably due to be changed anyway. Its meant to be changed every 3 years.
Sanding your knuckles before starting work can help. That way you cant skin them
