I believe rings are an engine out job especially as its wise to do bearings at the same time.
A catch can might solve the oil burning
What mileage?
worn rings come from huge mileage (we have evidence of those motors with over 400000km) or lots of short trips or poor oil change practices somewhere in its life.
Worn bors can be big mileage but also short trips cause acid to form in the combustion chamber which eats the chrome This was more a problem with the old high sulphur diesel.
